Having an educated opinion goes a long long way.

So, as my 17 (nearly 18) year old niece is a vegetarian recently changed to Vegan, I decided to do some serious research into the subject after she expressed disappointment and frustration at the response she gets from people on this topic.  Now, I’ll admit, my initial response was similar to many…  “What, you can seriously go without eating a perfectly cooked steak, or a delicious chicken breast?”  I love my meat and enjoy cooking with nice meat.

I didn’t want to just give her the same response that many do, without it being an educated opinion… so this is what prompted the research journey.

I must admit, I do stick to those two main meats listed above.. chicken & steak.  The are really the only ‘healthy’ ones that i like to eat.  I’m not a big fan of fish and only really eat it very rarely as I do acknowledge that it’s good for me.  I do have some sort of mince dish once a fortnight or so, but I’d prefer to stay away form it, as well as sausages, as you just can’t always be sure exactly what’s in them.  So, what I’m saying is that I don’t eat a huge range of meat.  My eyesight has always made it difficult to cut up anything with a bone in it, so I’ve stayed away from chops, t-bone etc.

During a conversation with Miss 17 this week, she questioned my biblical standpoint on the topic of meat eating, as I must admit I’d fallen back to those verses about dominion over animals when talking to her at other times etc.  Also, the one thing I’ve clung to is the ‘God gave us meat to eat’ argument.  Something prompted me to look into that and verify that I was in fact speaking correctly.  My research tells me that I WASN’T !!  (Whoopsie)

Gene:29-30 … And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 

Let’s also look at Genesis 2:9 ..And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.  and vs 16 – And the Lord God commanded the man (Adam), saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden (God’s first form of food for us was in fact grown from the ground….. maybe significant, maybe not, but an interesting point nonetheless.)

In vs 18 God decided that Adam should not be alone and that He would make him a helper, so the animals which God had created out of the dust back in Gen 1:20, were paraded past Adam, and he named each one.  A suitable helper had not been found, so it was then that God created Eve.  I think it’s very interesting that animals were first seen as Adam’s HELPER,  there is no mention or even hint at them created for his food.

In Chapter 3 vs 18, after the fall has occurred, God speaks of Adam eating the plants of the field, and bread.. but still no mention of eating meat.  (& so the plot thickens… who else is starting to think the Vegetarians maybe aren’t the crazy ones??)

However, in vs 20 & 21 of Chapter 3, it says this…  the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.  And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.   So, where did these ‘skins’ come from?  Several commentaries look at whether this was skin from an animal, which of course would have had to die in order for him to have the skin, or did God simply create the skin Himself?

In Genesis 4:4, the first specific mention of killing an animal occurs….Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions.  

When we get to Gen 8 vs 20…  the flood waters have subsided and Noah comes out of the ark and offers a sacrifice to The Lord and He finds the aroma ‘pleasing’.  Now, would this indicate that God was ok with the sacrifice of animals?   It had been made clear prior to this that a sacrifice was made of an innocent animal, to atone for our sins… all being a prelude to the ultimate innocent, Jesus, who would make the ultimate sacrifice for us on the cross… taking the penalty for our sin.  A commentary I read on this verse and others relating to it suggests that it wasn’t the aroma of animal blood and burnt flesh that God found appealing, but the repentant attitude of Noah which prompted him to do the sacrifice in the first place.  (Remembering we are fallen man.)

Gen 9:1-4 gets rather interesting… *remembering that man’s diet to this point has been only vegetarian…  And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

This paragraph from the same commentary mentioned above suggest this of Gen 9: 1-4…

This whole passage is a concession from God and does not express the will of God. God recognizes the evilness of the human heart and is allowing humankind to live in a state of being that is less than His desire or ideal.

The same commentary goes on to say…

However, upon the ark there was once again no death, and apparent obedience to the Lord. But following the Flood, when there was supposed to be another Edenic way of peaceful living and obedience to God, Noah and his family sacrificed innocent animals, because they supposedly recognized themselves as not pure, and needed to repent. This brings about the mixed feelings of God, as expressed in Genesis 8:21.

Apparently, it is easier to kill an innocent animal than it is to be obedient to the Lord our God. Or, perhaps there is more to this corrupted state of being. Are humans expressing their dominance and power over the animals by killing and eating those who are weaker than themselves (The sin of the boastful pride of life)? Are humans expressing their sins of the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes (1 John 2:16), by eating the flesh that had been denied them as poor people who looked upon the eating of flesh as a status symbol? I believe the answer to both questions is, “Yes!”

I particularly liked this following paragraph as it relates back to Gen 2:18 where animals were to be helpers.

For nearly a year, the animals upon the ark had lived in close confinement with Noah and his human family. It must have been as though these animals were also part of Noah’s family. The killing of the innocent animals for the sacrifice was a betrayal of the pre-existing peaceful state, and brought fear and terror to the heart and soul of every animal upon the ark. This is the key point that God emphasizes and expands upon in Genesis 9:2. Not only had the humans lost their perfect state of being with God, but now they had lost the companionship and fellowship of most of the animal kingdom.

God, knowing the evilness of the human heart, further grants the concession of eating the animals, for He acknowledges that the humans are not ready to repent of their evil nature.

Once again, a topic that requires some time with God to process.  I can’t honestly say that I’ll be changing to a vegetarian lifestyle tomorrow , but I can definitely tell you that my opinion on it has done a 180 from where I was a few days back.

It’s knowledge awesome !!!  I’ve chosen in this blog to look at this biblical side of the topic, but there is actually a complete other side to it also in regards to agricultural farming and the harm it causes to the environment.  I’m still researching that angle, so will fill you all in once I feel more equipped to do so.

Eat clean.. train dirty… trust God

Eat clean… train dirty… Trust God !! So… after an up & down kinda day. . I’ve decided this is going to be this season’s hashtag.
I have had 2 opportunities in recent days to be pretty naughty with my clean eating plan. .. and I am so happy to say that on both occasions,  I was able to either stick with my clean eating. . Or in the one instance I didn’t,  it was such a minor ‘slip up’ that I didn’t even feel the need to beat myself up over it.
I am actually really pleased with my resolution on this.  I just know that I know that God is providing me with the strength and perseverance I’m asking for,  as I normally wouldn’t be able to resist these ‘treats’. As I said on a previous blog entry. . My bodies likes & dislikes are changing.
I’m also loving having my 17yr niece to bounce ideas off. She is a vegetarian recently having gone completely vegan, so she is full of fab healthy ideas.  She seriously makes the best healthy snacks… that you wouldn’t even think are healthy.

I’m also experimenting with my new Nutri-infusion which has been amazing !! I am really so happy with it. . It actually DOES do everything they say it does, which can be rare for things bought off the tv.  A friend  and I did a shop at the local fruit & veg market yest,  so I’m well & truly stocked up for some yummy nutritious goodness in smoothy form.

I read some interesting information last night about drinking berry based drinks with your food as it assists with digestion due to the acidic content.
Here’s some healthy info for you all on this and other healthy gut foods. …

What is the key to good gut health? The answer is bacteria, millions of which inhabit the digestive tract breaking down food, helping to propel food through the digestive tract and providing protection against harmful invading organisms.

Foods that are high in fibre, rich in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, or that contain live probiotics, will encourage the growth of health-promoting bacteria colonies and support overall equilibrium balance in the digestive tract. Eating foods that are overly refined, processed or low in fibre will meanwhile place additional strain on the digestive system, potentially disrupting the important balance of health-promoting bacteria.

Berries are an excellent food for digestive health. They provide a good source of fibre, antioxidants, and polyphenols, which can selectively favour beneficial colonies of bacteria in the digestive tract.

Recent research on polyphenols has shown they interact with beneficial species of bacteria (similar to pre-biotics, which “feed” the good bacteria). The interactions encourage healthy bacteria growth. All types of berries, whether fresh or frozen, contain polyphenols.

Seaweed & chia seeds, as well as cruciferous vegetables (kale, cabbage, broccoli and silverbeet, to name just a few) are excellent foods for gut health; they provide various phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals, as well as a good source of fibre. Phytonutrients can benefit the gut by increasing the balance of good bacteria and also contain anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

The fibre content of cruciferous vegetables is particularly important as it can help move food through the digestive tract. The fibre in leafy greens in particular also promotes the growth of good bacteria. Pre-biotics are food sources for healthy bacteria; without them the healthy bacteria (probiotics) are unable to grow. Hence, the growth of beneficial colonies of bacteria is largely depending on the intake of both probiotic and pre-biotic foods.
Yoghurt is also fantastic but it should always taste sour, not sweet. The sourness is a reflection of the lactic-acid bacteria that have developed during the fermentation process in the milk.

Regular consumption of yoghurt can positively influence the balance of microflora in the gut, creating more of the “good guys”, such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium probiotics. These types of probiotics can help manufacture B-complex vitamins, as well as vitamins A and K, which are great for overall health as well as playing a role in a well-functioning digestive tract. They also help boost the immune system and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Sadly (coz I don’t really like it) oily fish – such as salmon, sardines and mackerel are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA, and DOHA. These fatty acids can play a vital role in healthy bowel function. They can work to lubricate the digestive tract and keep digestion flowing smoothly. They can also help to reduce inflammation and strengthen the intestinal lining, which can help to protect against gastrointestinal diseases.

& lastly in my disgestion lesson for tonight (lol)… Ginger is a traditional spice, revered throughout Asia for its ability to relieve gas and reduce abdominal bloating. In herbal medicine, it is considered to be an “intestinal spasmolytic” – in other words, a substance that can relax and sooth the digestive tract.

The active component of fresh ginger, known as gingerol contains anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, which can alleviate symptoms associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.

Aren’t you all glad I’ve educated in this fascinating topic?  Well, if it doesn’t interest you,  try to get interested coz I can tell you that my body is a whole lot happier on a clean eating diet.
It does seem ‘un-fun’ at times,  but that usually only happens when your 1. Using boring ingredients,  or 2. Not thinking outside the box.
When it comes down to it,  it’s really all quite interesting and worth educating yourself on.

Respecting the temple…. the continuing story :0)

Hi all…  Well, I’m just finishing up week 3 of my new healthy lifestyle.  So, how am I going?

Seeing I didn’t own a working set of scales when I started,  I can’t actually say what I have actually lost kg-wise, but I would guesstimate about 3kg.  However, what I’m learning is that it’s not all about the number on the scales.  My body is going through a process of changing it’s likes and dislikes too.  I do remember this from last time, but it does seem to be happening quicker this time, which can only be a good thing !!

Not that I have a known diary intolerance, but I have noticed over the years that if I had a milk drink out (more often than not it would be a skinny iced mocha… my ‘coffee’ of choice) for morning tea after having had a bowl of cereal & milk in the morning, my tummy wouldn’t like it so much.  So, with this in mind, I decided to cut down on my dairy intake (mostly milk).  All that’s been required to do this  is changing my cereal breakfast into a cup of green tea (so gross it’s not even funny) and a couple of cooked eggs with some avocado.  If I’m out of avocado, then I have a banana or kiwi fruit with my eggs.  The green tea is for assisting the weight loss, but the cutting down on the milk was more for added comfort in my tummy.  I do add a little honey to my green tea which does make it bearable.  I also just purchased some green tea with peppermint and while it doesn’t particularly had anything flavour wise, it does seem to be more refreshing.

I found this decrease of dairy to have been a very good decision when DH and I went out for a quick ‘coffee date’ this week and I decided to ‘treat’ myself to a skinny iced mocha.  Well, I didn’t even get a quarter way through it and couldn’t drink anymore.  I just couldn’t take in any more milk, as well as the overall sweetness of the drink.  My body has clearly changed in how much it likes sweet things.  How cool, right !!!

My excerises of choice have been sit-ups (I’m now doing 80 per day and upping it by ten each week), skipping, weights, walking and leg lifts (to get a nice butt..LOL).  I do have a x-trainer and a rower but actually haven’t got to using them as yet as it requires me finding a good half hour to get in there and get on them.  I do really enjoy using them though, so I’ll just need to improve my time management.

Having ‘coffee’ out was a little boring in the first two weeks as I’d sit there with nothing while the person I was with might have a big ‘ole slice of mud cake or something equally scrumptious, but I seem to be getting quite ok with it all.  I take my water bottle along and just think of all the money I’m saving.  LOL.  Also, what I’ve found to be a great idea is instead of going out for ‘coffee’ where the food choices aren’t that healthy at all….  Going out for an actual meal is far better, as there are usually semi-healthy options available  For example, I went out for lunch today and ordered a chicken, spinach & quinoa salad.  It was soooooo yummy and coming in at only 2449kjs… not too bad for lunch.  I did plan to have water with it, but actually forgot to get any.. whoops.  My sister let me have half a glass of her diet coke, so all was good in the world of good eating/drinking.

Speaking of water intake though… I have hugely upped my water intake on a daily basis.  I try to achieve 3lts, but realistically I’m only getting in 2ltrs per day.  I was drinking one can of coke zero per day, but have now gotten it down to one can per week, if that.  Not a bad achievement me thinks.

I’m also being a lot more disciplined with my vitamin intake, making sure I take my women’s multivitamin each day, as well as fish oil (to assist in me continuing to be a super clever homeschool Mum.. ha ha), as well as Olive Leaf Extract.  My vitamin & minerals would also be increased since I began this journey simply because of the wide rang of fruit & veg I’m taking onboard.

I’m also wanting to start having a detox drink prior to going to bed which is supposed to be super fab at combatting tummy fat.  Normally I’m not a fan of these detox drinks but seeing as this one only has a cucumber, grated ginger, half a lemon, some parsley and 1/3 cup of water, it seems pretty good to me.  Nothing weird in that lot.  My sit-ups are certainly helping with this problem area of mine, but anything to help along the way would be great.

The sit-ups issue has been a surprise to me as it started out as a little challenge to myself as I find sit-ups so hard to do.  Well, it’s a gross understatement to say that I underestimated my own ability.  My original plan was to start at 20 per day and increase it by 10 each week, with the long term plan that by summer, I’d be doing 170 sits per day (sounds crazy right). Surprisingly I’ve been able to up that number quicker than I was anticipating, with my daily rate at the already stated above amount of 80 per day.   When I first worked out I’d be doing that kind of number per day by summer, I was like… yeah right.. like that’s gonna happen.. LOL… but now that I’m pumping out 80 per day, I can easily see myself achieving those big numbers.

I am constantly reminded the I’m only doing so well on my journey because I’m being carried by the grace of God.  I am surprised over and over when I can so easily have my water over a fancy drink, or eat nothing when others enjoy something super yummy.  Or when I can pump out those last 20 sit-ups late at night when it was so hard even walking up the stairs to get to my room to do them.   When I am weak, HE is strong !!!!!!  Not just physical strength when I’m tired, but emotional strength when it comes to self-control over right choices.

On the tiredness issue, man I’ve been feeling it.  There were a couple of days this week where I actually didn’t like being in my own skin I felt so tired and achy.  But I was once again blown away by the strength God gave me in those times to still stick to my exercise plan.  It is beyond comforting going forward to know that He is there for me ALL THE TIME!!

OK… so there’s my update for now.  I’ll keep you posted along the journey….  which will be a long process seeing as it won’t end until I get rid of this frustrating earthly body and gain my new heavenly body… the way the world is going, it seems like maybe it could be sooner rather than later, by hey… that’s another blog entirely. :0)
