sin

Developing a hatred for sin

Deep title right ?  Well, it’s certainly a deep issue and one that was, amongst other things, looked at in one of my BC lectures today.  I’m currently working my way through the subject, ‘Jesus’ Leadership Style’ and when looking at the area of our sin issues, something was really revealed to me about a facet of going through these issues that can be quite difficult.

When we have a particular area of sin that we struggle with… let’s just look at gossiping for example, it’s best for us to recognise it as the weakness in us that it is, and then ask The Lord to break out heart for what breaks His, and in turn, give us a hatred of that sin.  This is a great method if you really apply it, as you allow God to get into that area of your life, work on you and teach you how to change.  (One of Jesus’ best styles of leadership… He didn’t just tell us what.. he told us how.. and gave us the power to do it.)

However, it can greatly effect your friendships and relationships in general.  eg.  If you liked to have a good ‘ole gossip sesh with a particular girlfriend, and that girlfriend isn’t on-board with your recognition of gossiping being a sin issue that needs God’s hand in changing, you’re going to end up with issues with that friend.

The Bible explains that relationships can have a powerful effect upon us.  In 1 Cor 15:33 it says “Evil company corrupts good habits.” and on the positive side, Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend”

Looking more closely at sin issues, an illustration that was used today was of a house and how we can tend to have that ‘nice room’.  In older style houses it was usually the front living room.  That was where the ‘good’ furniture was, and the cabinets with the good crystal were displayed etc.  We’d bring guests into that room coz it was always kept neat & tidy.  The  rest of the house could look like a bomb had gone off, but that room was always respectable.  We can attempt to present ourselves to God & others in that way too.  We’ve got a ‘front room’ that’s ‘got it all together’. …  a bit like a Sunday selves and a Monday-Saturday selves.  At church on Sunday we’re perfectly put together, quietly spoken, patient, dependable, loyal (& lots more complimentary adjectives), but through the week we’re a loose canon.

We need to allow God into all of our ‘rooms’ and allow him to do a Reno on us.  Allow him into those back rooms, the ones we like to keep hidden.. the anger room, the selfish room, the gossiping room, the inappropriate room… or whatever your particular sin issues are.

Renos are dirty and dusty things…  not pleasant to live through, uncomfortable, painful, pushes us out of our comfort zone and sometimes past our point of ‘I’m gonna lose it’.  It’s the same when we allow God to do a reno on us.  It’s not gonna be pleasant, but we know that God sees us as the finished product.  He doesn’t see the peeling wall paper, sagging ceiings and tatty carpet… He sees fresh paint, beautiful ornate features and glossy polished floorboards.

I believe it’s also really beneficial to remember that God has a renovation shedule mapped out for our lives.  We’ll never be completely done until we’re standing in His presence in Glory… and I for one want to let Him deal with my ‘rooms’ on this side of eternity. (even when it hurts a bit..or a lot). I know I always harp on about it, but this is just another important reason why we need to stay in constant communication with The Holy Spirit.  We’re constantly ‘putting rooms onto our houses’ and new sin issues are going to come up for us, and we’re not always going to find it easy to let God into every room.

In Romans 7 Paul gives us a very encouraging word when he tells us : What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Yes, sorry that the gold nugget was in the last line, but hey… it was a good read for you anyway.  :0)

Another great illustration of how we can best be an effective Christ follower is to remember that we have the Power of Christ flowing through us, and when we allow sin issues to take hold of us, it creates ‘blockages’.  The Lord will simply not be able to work in and through us with the most effective results while these ‘road blocks’ are there.

Ok peeps…  I’m signing off for now.  As usual, I could type on you simply ages.  I’m continually blown away by how much I learn anew and am reminded of in each and every lecture or bible study session.

What I learnt or was reminded of today – I’m a living breathing construction site !!  (PS.  I wear a pink hardhat)

Scripture I’m soaking in today – Ephesians 2 :10 – For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Being in good company

I’m gonna be honest. .  I’m struggling tonight.
I want to be walking the right path.. I NEED to be walking the right path as I have little eyes watching me and little ears listening to me.  (and some big eyes & ears too)
However these very encouraging facts don’t make the path any easier.  The bumps are still there,  the ‘stones’ are still thrown, the misconceptions of me by others are still there.
I solidly believe that I not only witness to my children through things that I say,  but possibly even more so by things that I DON’T.  When I’m abused by a family member and I don’t respond in like tone or with harsh words.  When I’m treated like a ‘goodie-two-shoes’ but choose to stay silent and not ‘defend myself’.
When I’m outright verbally attacked,  but refuse to take the bait and retaliate. .. they see that.   & you know what else they see… the frustration on the person’s face when I won’t lower myself to their level.
Isn’t it interesting (& frustrating) that we can KNOW that God’s opinion is the only one that matters and yet the darts fired by others still hurt.  I often wish that I was impervious to these comments etc but I also know that I am taught a lesson through everything single dig at me,  every single comment made. .. and every single not-so-subtle insult on Facebook.
I actually started this blog last night but the fact that I stopped part way through turned out to be a blessing in itself as I actually needed to be reminded of my own words when dealing with someone today.
Praise The Lord it was actually a really great day today spent at the beach with Miss 14 & niece 17 (well great day except for the sunburnt back of the legs. .. what on earth).  Lots of time to think and talk to Jesus while the girls were out paddle boarding.  Something about being at the beach (I think it’s actually in any natural setting) that gets me closer to God.

I am constantly blown away of late with the relevance of each mornings devotion and how it has been speaking directly into current situations & struggles. If you don’t do a morning devotion,  I’d really encourage you to as it is just the BEST way to start the day.
So, getting back to my title. .. with all that I’ve been dealing with in days of late… I am comforted knowing that Jesus was hated,  he was ridiculed,  he was treated as a fool… so when I feel treated like this. . I know I’m in good company.
Blessings peeps xox

My heart is breaking for the Duggar family today.

So, here I am blogging about the Duggars again…  but I’m not really blogging abut the Duggars so much as sin itself, and the terrible consequences that can come from it.  Don’t get me wrong… I’m not feeling sorry for anyone today, but feeling for them in their brokenness.

My heart breaks for Anna this morning.  She has only just a month ago given birth to her fourth child, and now after the scandal that hit earlier this year …which in fact she WAS aware of years before the world found out… she has been hit once again, but his time..  She was not in the know on this one.

I have seen this situation lived out in a friend, actually two friends..  and it hurts so much to watch, I can only imagine the agony of actually living it.

My thoughts go heavenward for Anna, Josh, their children and their entire extended family today as they go through this situation.  Of course the media has already begun to attack them in the most violent way, but I can only trust that they will be able to ignore that and lean into God like never before.

I know that as soon as we Christians talk about God’s forgiveness, the haters hit back with what a crutch that is, or that this sin is not forgivable, but we KNOW that it is, and in fact we need to KNOW that it is, or we would get bogged down in our own failings.

Psalm 103:12 (NIV)

as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

I also came across this in my limited research this morning, and thought it was quite a good reminder for all of us.

FIGHTING THE DAILY BATTLE

To overcome the temptations you will continually face, follow God’s simple plan:

  • Stand firm against temptation (James 4:7; 1 Pet. 5:6-9; 2 Tim. 2:22).
  • Confess your sins to a brother or sister in Christ and pray to be healed (James 5:16).
  • Hide God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11), trusting in its strength (Heb. 4:12).
  • Minister to God with sacrifices of praise (Heb. 13:15) until you are filled with the peace and joy of the Lord (Isaiah 26:3).

Blessings !!! xox
